Dataview

Dataview is a real-time data acquisition system developed by MIS as an Olex option. It acquires and displays fishing and scientific technical data, in particular data that Olex cannot integrate directly because it has no geographic reference, such as Scanmar and Marelec trawl sensors.

Dataview handles:

  • acquisition of sensor measurements;
  • time-stamping;
  • archiving;
  • graphical display, for monitoring;
  • real-time broadcast on the vessel’s Ethernet network.

What Dataview displays

Dataview runs alongside Olex, on a second screen. It can display:

  • trawl geometry measured by the Scanmar system: trawl depth, door spread, headline-to-footrope and headline-to-seabed height, water speed and temperature through the trawl, catch sensor;
  • warp tension and length measured by the Marelec system;
  • weather station data: wind direction and strength, atmospheric pressure, air and water temperature…

Technical features

  • Dual screen: Dataview runs on Linux in dual-head mode with the WindowMaker window manager, which can also launch other applications (word processor, spreadsheet…).
  • Acquisition: fully configurable by the user, who sets the communication parameters of each sensor (IP or serial) and chooses what to archive.
  • Time-stamping: Dataview’s Log mode uses the system time, set from the GPS, manually or automatically through a network time server (NTP protocol).
  • Display: raw sensor data, numerical values, or curves over time.
  • Archiving: all sensor output is time-stamped, compacted and archived in ASCII format in real time on the hard disk. Any sensor (thermosalinograph, CTD probe, gravimeter, magnetometer…) can be connected to the serial cards to record its data in a Log file.
  • Broadcast: Dataview broadcasts the acquired data on the vessel’s Ethernet network as UDP broadcast frames. Several Olex or Dataview workstations can thus be installed on the vessel’s network.

A reference: Ifremer

In 2002, Ifremer selected MIS to fit its three coastal vessels, Gwen Drez, Thalia and Europe, with two set-ups each, one on the bridge and one for the scientists: networked dual-screen PCs with 8-port serial acquisition cards, running Olex and Dataview.
